From the Web: Another Explanation of Fermi’s Paradox that sounds wrong to me.

Happy New Year.  My first post of 2017!  Here’s to hoping for a good year.

As I usually do when I want to write my novels, I stare at my computer until I get the urge to write or look at Facebook or something.  This morning, Facebook won out.  I found a post about Brian Cox explanation of Fermi’s Paradox.  Another article talking about how all aliens must destroy themselves before they break free of their home planet.

I have addressed how I feel this is wrong in this previous post, so I will not dwell on those reasons here. Of course; I, like them, have no clue whether aliens exist or not. We have no substantiated proof either way, yet.  It is all conjecture.  But what fun this is!

To me, these arguments for self-destruction is superimposing our behavior on any alien race that might exist. While I believe this is a very possible outcome for the human race.  I do not believe that means all intelligent races will do the same.

Look at other examples on Earth. Bees for example.  How do they expand? Do they grab every possible hive location as soon as possible?  Do they constantly war with themselves? They do have their cold-blooded aspects but not like us. Bees expand, or swarm, when they have grown large enough that they can not “smell” the queen. When a hive is so large that the queen’s pheromones can not reach all members in the hive, those members not ‘under her spell’ make a new queen. When she is born, the old queen flies off with a portion of the workers.

A hive grows larger because it has produced enough food to allow the colony to successfully grow.  So instead of producing swarms that go out and just find land, they do it when they are over populated.  Could an alien race act like this?  Why not?

Another example could be the big cats or wolves. Normally they also do not go out and grab all they can grab. They keep their territory unless resources are scarce.

Why would aliens not have a similar behavior? Why would we think that aliens would make their main goal of exploration of everything?  Why wouldn’t they just explore their immediate surroundings, find a few places and settle in for a while to develop these resources.

Within 10 light years of Sol (our solar system) there are 15 known stellar objects (stars and red/brown dwarf stars). These are the ones we know of.  The last being discovered in 2014, with a few more found since 2010. This leads me to believe there might be at least double this number in this space.  If there are 30 systems in this small space, that is a lot of exploration for us to undertake.  Each one requiring a mission to be set up, speed up and slow down of the craft on the way, communications between the stars, etc..  That is a lot of resources.  And we still have problems on earth that are priorities.

Within 100 light years of Sol, there are over 500 known G type stars (ones we can see as a twinkle of light in the night’s sky).  In the 10 light year range, only 2 of them are G type. So if we take a similar ratio of dwarf stars to G types, in 100 light years range there might be 2500 stars.  Include even fainter ones, like we are discovering still in 10 light year range, and that might be 5000 or more.  Again think of all the trip planning and particulars of the trip to get to all of them.

Humans seem to have the wanderlust that makes them always go over the horizon. That doesn’t seem to be a trait of most of our fellow species of Earth. Why would aliens act more like us and not more like one of the other species of Earth?

Additionally, there are so many resources in this solar system, why would we need to go elsewhere? Yes for humans, its wanderlust.  If the species was not prone to wanderlust, when would they need to move?  When they have exhausted the resources of a solar system?  How long would it take for us to mine out this system?  It has been 5000 years of recorded time and we still have not mined out the resources of Earth. What about the moon? asteroids? Mars? Jupiter and her moons? etc…

If a race takes 1000 years to exhaust the resources of an entire star system and thus requiring the aliens to move on.  It would take this race 30,000 years to exhaust the 10 light year range from Sol.  With the Milky Way galaxy being 100,000 light years wide, it would take this race 30 million years to strip a 10 light year wide strip from one end to the other.

To do this for a 1000 light year wide strip, it would take 3 billion years. That would still leave the vast majority of the galaxy untouched and that is a quarter the age of the galaxy. So even if we had a locust acting race out there, chances are, the galaxy is just too big to swallow.

A thought on Fermi’s Paradox

With the idea that our world is probably not so unique among the millions of star systems and billions of planets, in the Milky Way alone. The chances of there being other intelligent races is pretty good.

Also we tend to discover something mind-blowing every decade or so. Things we had no idea existed a generation ago (atoms, quarks, types of planets around other stars, DNA, etc..) are a reality today.

Having said that, I believe there are many alien civilizations in our neighborhood of the Milky Way and faster than light (FTL) travel is possible. We just aren’t there yet.

Many ask. “Why don’t the aliens visit us?”  Well let’s be honest and put the ego aside. We really are not that special are we??  If an alien race has discovered how to travel between the stars in a time frame that is acceptable to them, then what are we to them?  A pre-contact Amazonian tribe?

How many of us are rushing to go say hi to those that remain? Yes, we like to see the occasional article about them and maybe a National Geographic special or a Youtube video but really how often do we think of them?  Please realize this is not to denigrate these tribes, just using as an example we might understand.

If there are millions of earth like planets in our galaxy, then aliens coming here for our resources is probably an idea that should only exist in Hollywood. Humans are the resource they want, you say?  Okay why? We are rather frail, we can not exist easily in many other environments, we are rather annoying and hard to keep in line. Wouldn’t a prospective overlord race think that robots would be better choice of labor than these little meat bags?

They want to rule us you think?  I would imagine before they “pushed the button” they would investigate us for a while. Especially since we do not have the technology to detect them. Once they watch us for a while, what do you think?  Would any self-respecting conquering race try to bring a bunch of psychopathic, inventive short lived creatures into their empire?

With the ability to gain any resource anywhere else in the galaxy and us being primitives, what value would we serve?  Also we tend to fight ourselves and not just for mating, we are really good at killing each other. Why bring such a crazy race into your empire with the chance they might infect others or God forbid, learn new technologies where they might challenge the established rule.

No, if anything it would be best to watch us.  Like we do the Amazonian tribes with fly overs. Keep an eye on us. See if we kill off ourselves or actually learn how to work together and get into space. Then they can take us over or if not the conquering type, they might welcome us to the neighborhood.

“We should hear their signals.” One might say.  Well think on it.  We have only been broadcasting roughly 100 years. In that time most of our communications is now via the internet (land lines mostly), mobiles (short range) and satellite (directed communications). Most broadcast medias are being replaced. There is talk of quantum communications, where there is no signal path.  With us doing this in 100 years and still have barely left our planet, what do you think a race that can go between stars is capable of?

Most likely to hear another civilization, we would have to catch them in the first 200 years of their space age. After that, then the chances for them to emit radio waves for us to pick up will drop off significantly.

What we might be able to watch their graviton emissions from spaceships flying near our solar system. We have recently figured out how to measure gravitons. Now it is just for the truly big objects in the Universe. In time we might refine that ability. If the aliens use big ships, then chances are they will cause a disturbance in the gravitational waves as they fly by, snapping their versions of pictures at the primitives.

Like the tribes people looking up at the sound of an airplane and wondering which Gods they might be and what would happen if they come to visit. We will hopefully one day track a graviton emission passing our solar system at speeds well above the normal stellar objects. We too will wonder what god-like beings are doing that and what does that forebode for us, if they decide to stop and say hi.

 

Short Story: “Detection Lost.”

With the innovation that allows us to detect gravitational waves, new things will be discovered. Maybe………..

2052 AD The mission control room was silent. Everyone was watching the main monitors, as the last of the Cosmic Interferometer Gravitational Directional Array (CIGDA)nodes was to report taking its position. This node was the furthest out, at 80 million km. The other eleven nodes had already reached their position. The last a few hours before this node.

The feed the controllers were watching was almost five minutes in the past due to the distance light had to travel. Government and civilian officials were on hand besides the mission control room team. These worthies were up in the visitor’s box. Out of the way of those that actually worked but near enough to see when the last node linked up.

Doctor Tanya Hirano was extremely nervous, staring intently at Jay Garrett’s back. He was the Director of Node Communications, responsible for ensuring the direction finding system actually worked. From a technical perspective. Doctor Hirano was the brains behind the use of gravitational waves to detect space object movement.

The idea had been in Sci-Fi for nearly a hundred years. With the dream of detecting gravitational waves becoming a reality in 2016. All that was left was for refinement of the detecting method and for someone to come up with the means to detect things. James Grimm, a writer in 2016, came up with the basic method.

Many of the control room engineers were staring at Lena Romano. She was monitoring the communications from Node Omega, the twelfth node. She turned to Jay and smiled with a thumbs up. Tanya was watching and saw the signal. She could breath again.

Turning back to the assembled officials. “Thirty-six years ago, in 2016, detecting gravitational waves became a reality. In that year, an unknown Sci-Fi writer, published a story about using gravitational waves to detect interstellar traveling objects.”

She walked to the podium and looked back down at Jay to see if things were still going as planned. Jay, smiled back at her, nodded his head. She continued, “By creating a group of twelve receivers and linking them back to a correlation engine on Earth, we will be able to determine the direction of massive objects many light years away and smaller objects much closer. Additionally, we should be able to further identify and track objects much further out in our solar system.”

Jay turned back to his team and via the speaker in the visitor’s room, Tanya and the others could hear him. “Alright team, let’s sync them up.”

Everyone was silent, while the large viewing screens in the control room displayed large bars with each node’s name above one of the bars. Tanya turns down the speaker volume and turns towards the crowd, “We are now trying to sync each of the nodes to the core. The core, here in Tokyo, is sending out sequenced messages to each of the nodes. The nodes time stamp the receiving of these messages and then send back the resulting time stamp. They will do this a few hundred times until the core has a sufficient number to build the off set time difference between each node and the core. Once that is done a few time samplings of what the nodes are hearing will be sent back for further sync analysis. When the core believes it has all nodes properly sync’d up, then we will start recording what we hear.”

A military officer in the crowd asks, “How long will this take Doctor?”

“We should be sync’d in approximately fifteen minutes.”

A news reporter off to the side asks, “Doctor, is it true we will hear aliens?” A polite laugh from the crowd.

Not missing a beat, Tanya responds, “That was one of the questions we wanted to answer. If the aliens are traveling in large mass ships, at a high percentage of the speed of light, we should be able to detect them. If close enough.”

“How close Doctor?” Another news person. Everyone was quiet and interested in her responses.

“We estimate we can detect a million ton object three light years away. That would put it almost near Alpha Centauri.”

“A million tons? That is about 4 USS Trump class aircraft carriers.” Said one of the US Admirals in the crowd. All the news people were furiously writing down or speaking into their recorders.

One of the Chinese diplomats came forth. In an exasperated voice, “Doctor, do you really believe this is possible? My government believes this project was a waste of money and hearing this nonsense is further insult.”

Taking a calming breath, Tanya responded, “Ambassador Xi, the Chinese government’s position is well known. It has also agreed to wait and see what is produced before further comments. Correct?”

In the background, the display on the viewing screen blinked a few times. Before Ambassador Xi could respond, Tanya turned the volume back up, on the speaker, since Jay was talking. “…chronization has completed and now we are recording live data. The viewing screen will start to display all objects, as we get hits. Over time these objects will have their data refined when we detect more waves against them.”

The screen changed to a display of the solar system with large blips coming from all over the place. Every planet and the Sun had large blips over them, along with the asteroid belt. The Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud were large glowing rings of overlapping blips. As was most of interstellar space. The crowd was bubbling with comments among themselves. Even Ambassador Xi was excitedly talking to one of his assistants.

Tanya spoke over the crowd, into a mic, “Congratulations Doctor Garrett and team.” “Congratulations Doctor Hirano.” Responded Jay as the control room cheered.

Back to the crowd, Tanya continued, “Over the next few weeks we expect to have the solar system completely mapped out. The CIGDA Ring, as we are affectionately calling it, covers 100 million square kilometers. The closer an object is, the higher the frequency of the gravitational waves. The farther the object, the lower the frequency. Additionally, other characteristics tell us how massive the object is.”

The representative of the European Confederacy spoke up, “Congratulations Doctor, you did it. When will we all be able to get feeds off the data?”

US Admiral McKinley responded, “First we need to refine the data before passing to all the signatories.”

An argument erupted over the American attempt to control the data flow. Tanya looked at the previously happy officials, now in a heated argument over who gets the data. Shaking her head at the lunacy of these control freaks. The data should be for everyone, she thought.

Looking at the viewing monitors, How can you hold this data secret, it will benefit the world. The newsies were floating around the edge of the arguing officials, trying to get sound bites of the juicy, newsworthy comments and insults. The world had become more peaceful but just barely.

Watching some of the blips become more solid, Tanya was mesmerized by the objects. Let the idiots argue, they can not ruin my day. Looking down at Jay, she saw him smiling at her, shrug his shoulders and turn back to one of the engineers.

She realized the speaker was still on so the control room engineers could hear the bickering going on in the visitor’s room. She turned off the speaker, causing many of the engineers to look up at her. She shrugged her shoulders too, a few engineers smiled then returned to their work. The bickering continued unabated. You said, we said, we paid, etc…

It was the one blot on an otherwise fantastic day for her. She had spent ten years arguing for and selling this idea. Now, here it was. The tracks kept clogging the screen up with only a few becoming more defined. In time, she thought.

Then one track in the upper right corner of the map caught her eye. It moved. Things should not be moving this soon. Over weeks yes, unless it was a Near Earth object. She continued to concentrate on that object, while the crowd argued and the control room engineers worked their consoles.

It moved again!

Tanya was thinking, The team should be noticing this. Maybe no one is thinking of anything at this time. We all thought it would take weeks to clear up the pictures beyond the local planets. She looked at the station that was responsible for tracking fast moving objects. The person was talking to his neighbor.

She looked up again and the object was no longer where she expected. What happened to it? She searched around the region of the screen, finally seeing it as it moved to another spot.

Quickly moving to a console in the visitor’s room, she started to enter her credentials. Some in the room stopped bickering to watch her. Assuming she will present a new view for them. Others continued the argument with gusto.

Getting into the system, she started the viewing application and entered the object’s number. The main view screen cleared away all the blips less that one. Which moved again. Now replaced with 1321g1.

The room was silent as everyone was wondering what this object was. The control room went silent too. Jay reacted quicker than most, knowing Tanya well as they worked together most of these last ten years. Also as lovers, she had told him her desire to really find evidence of aliens. He hoped she was onto something and not desiring to see things that could be a detriment for her future career.

He started to shout orders to the engineers to start recording and evaluating the object being concentrated on.

“Doctor, what are you doing and what does this mean?” Asked one of the officials.

Not turning around to see who talked, “This object has already moved seven times since we recorded it. It is close but not sure how close.”

Another person, “Could this be a Near Earth Object? Should we worry?”

The object moved again, 1321h1.

Seeing the speaker light, she turned on the control room speaker. Still not answering the speaker. “Yes Jay?”

“Doctor Hirano, preliminary estimates are projecting this object at 15 million tons and about one light year away.”

The object’s track was displayed and it seemed to be cutting across the inside corner of the Oort cloud. A few more tracks and it would be off the view of this screen. Tanya was doing the calculations in her head but wanted to hear it from the core.

“What is the speed?”

Jay turned to another engineer and as they were calculating, the object updated.

Jay turned to Tanya with shock on his face. Hitting the mic button, “It was traveling at approximately 30% of the speed of light. But it stopped.”

Noise erupted behind Tanya. Everyone was trying to ask her what was meant by that and what was going on. She tried to signal for quiet and after a few minutes she finally achieved it.“The number 1321 is the object number. The letter is the number of instances the track has moved around. We built the system to only update this when an object moves more than ten million miles relative to its last position. This ensures we are not getting crazy with the movement markers. The raw data can show us that later. The last number represents the number of waves we have detected the object at the current location. As you can see, this object was moving along rather quickly and then stopped.”

“How is that possible?” someone in the crowd cried out.

Shaking her head,”I am not sure. People please realize that we need to build up a knowledge base of what is being recorded. I can not truthfully answer with any degree of certainty.”

“So it’s probably nothing right?” asked one of the reporters.

Shrugging her shoulders, she hit the mic button, “Doctor Garrett, any additional information?”

“The raw data suggests it has decreased its speed to 10% of light speed.”

Over the next hour it sat in the J position, while the gathered officials and engineers tried to guess what was going on. Calls out to observatories, to governments and SETI were made to try and see if anyone can zoom in on the area and find out additional information. No one responded that they could. Discussions over the data feeds intensified as many of the governments wanted to the data so they can do their own analysis against other forms of data they had.

After another three hours, the data feeds were being passed to many interested parties. Other tracks were checked to see if any other objects acted similarly. Four and a half hours later, the object started moving again.

The crowd had only lessened a little. Everyone was trying to determine the import of Object 1321. No one really wanted to leave what could be a historical moment in the history of humanity and Earth.

Over the next hour, Object 1321 moved off the display. Tanya had the display expand further out from 2 light years to 4 light years. The next control room shift came on but the retiring shift did not leave. An hour and a half later, the object was listed as “Detection Lost”.

Many started to leave, many questions remaining unanswered. Was it a craft, a natural object or just some wackiness in the system? Tanya and Jay left that day, excited about what that might mean. How their system found that and the idea they might see more like it.

The excitement continued into the night in their love making. In the early morning hours, a satisfied Tanya, listening to Jay’s breathing, took in the view of the stars through the window. Her last thoughts before sleep took her were, I wonder why it stopped?

Around 5am that morning, a new object appeared near where Object 1321 held it’s position. This object was labeled Object 2912. It moved slightly over the next few hours but in the excitement of Object 1321, no one really noticed that Object 2912 came in to the solar system from a start point near one light year to near the orbit of Pluto. And there it sat.

Maybe the beginning of a new story?

 

 

 

Short Story: Time to Come Home.

“Mr. President, we have General Finder on the line.”

“Thank you Colonel. General Finder, it is time, we are going to Defcon 1. We need to launch immediately.” Said President Crue.

Gasps around the command center, as most of the operators stopped talking.

Colonel Mendez was ashen white. “Mr. President, what are you doing? There is no immenient threat.”

“Colonel are you contradicting me?” President Crue said.

Swallowing hard, “Mr. President, I believe this is an illegal order.”

General Finder was switched over to the speakerphone. “Mr. President, what is going on, why would we launch?”

“Does anyone else wish to disobey my orders?” An agitated president said. Pointing at his secret service agents, “Remove the colonel. General do I need someone to replace you too?”

The agents looked at each other and then moved to apprehend the colonel. One of the Marine guards raised his weapon at the Secret Service agents and ordered “Halt, stand down, sirs.”

 The other Marines looked unsure for a second but then followed the other Marine. The agents were outnumbered three to one.

President Crue was looking extremely angry and stood up when General Finder spoke, “Everyone calm down. Mr. President what is the meaning of this?”

“Someone over there arrest and remove General Finder.  This is outrageous that my trusted officers would disobey the President of the United States in such a critical situation.”

Colonel Mendez slammed his hand on the table, “Sir, what critical situation? You are acting as a madman.”

 Everyone was looking at each other, no one moving. The president was fuming, the colonel was starring at the president. The Marines and agents were standing off and the other military operators were frozen at their terminals. No one was moving, then.

A glow surrounded one of the console operators and the operator, a female captain, stood up. “Ah young sir, I have found you. It is time to go home.”

President Crue looked at the operator in surprise, “Suhan, what are you doing here? I am in the middle of a situation. I will come home later.”

All the other people in the room starred between the young captain and the president. Lost looks and looks of incredulity were displayed on all those in the room. Even the Marines and the Secret Service agents were lowering their weapons and looking at this exchange.

“Young sir, your mother demands you come home immediately. The party will start soon.” said Suhan.

“I am not ready. I have a war to wage with these people.” pouted President Crue.

“Sir, these beings probably would not appreciate you destroying their race. Best you come home now.” Suhan started to turn.

“No, I am not coming.” President Crue whined, then defensively, “I will not destroy their race, many will survive. It will be interesting. You will see.”

 General Finder’s voice came across the speakerphone. “What in the hell is going on over there, somebody…”

Suhan waved a hand and the line went dead. “Really sir, I must insist you come now. These primitive beings can be here for you next time. Do not make me pull you.”

A worried look crossed President Crue’s face. “You wouldn’t dare. Mother will not allow you.”

“Actually your mother has authorized me to pull you if I need to.” Suhan rose a hand and a multi-colored ball appeared, pulsating different colors in different areas.

Colonel Mendez found his voice, “What or who are you?”

President Crue smiled an amused smile, “Surprise!”

 Suhan looked bored, “Young sir, it is time.”

Looking resigned, “Oh very well, if I must.” Then looking at the Colonel, “You can have your idiot back.”

Colonel Mendez said, “What have you done to President Crue?”

“Nothing, I just borrowed him. He really is a simpleton, never would have won the election himself, so I helped him.” Standing up. “Now I must go for now, but I will be back to continue our little war.”

Frightened but one of the Marines said, “You were going to kill us all?”

“No no no dear boy, not all of you. The missile exchange would have killed many of you but not all of you.  In a thousand years your descendants would know of this day as the day of the God’s Fire. Quite interesting how their story will develop.”

“Sir, that is enough. These primitives do not understand what you are saying.”

“Oh come now Suhan, they are actually quite smart for their age.”

Colonel Mendez said, “We don’t want you back. Never come back.”

Suhan looked at the Colonel, “What did you say?”

President Crue, “No!  No! Don’t say it.”

Colonel Mendez looked at Suhan, “What? Never come back?”

Suhan, “Yes, do you mean that?” Looking at the other people in the command center. “Do you all wish for him to not come back?”

President Crue was screaming, “No No No, do not say it. Please!”

A resounding chorus of “YES!” from all in the command center.

“No please, you are ruining my fun!”

Suhan looks at President Crue, “Young sir, you are now bound by the Writ of the Plea to no longer interfere with this race of beings.” A bright flash occurred and President Crue fell to the floor. No one moved.

Suhan looked at Colonel Mendez, “Do not worry human, he is gone and your human is back. He will not be allowed to interfere again. I am sorry that he had gotten this far.”

“He was going to kill us all.” Cried out one of the operators.

“Yes, well that did seem his intent. I do apologize. As you see, we stopped him before he could.”

“Who are you and what makes you think you can do this to us.” Colonel Mendez demanded.

“Who we are is not your concern. What makes us think we can do this to you? My dear sir, you are babes, with little understanding of the universe. I am but a servant and could destroy your world with a thought. As you do with your lower life forms on this world, we do with you. You were his entertainment.” Sitting back in her seat.

“I am really sorry that he almost destroyed you. I will advise his mother, the Empress, to bar all further interference with your species and region of space. To give you a chance to live free for awhile.”

The captain fainted and then a second later, looked around and freaked out. President Crue was moaning and trying to get up. Everyone else was still frozen in place trying to make sense of what just happened.

From the Web: Finding Aliens with Gravity Waves

Recently, there has been a lot of talk of being able to detect gravity waves. The dreamer in me definitely loves that idea. An article on Gizmodo by Jennifer Ouellette discusses that they think they can detect waves made by very large objects.

Assuming that they have figured out how to measure gravity waves, how can we use it? I think we have discovered our first long range detection system for alien craft. Similar to Radio Direction Finding techniques, we will have Gravity Direction Finding systems.

These systems will “listen” for the waves, in all directions. It should be linked to provide a direction finding solution on where the object that caused the wave is located. The detection system will need to be able to determine which part of the sensor first registered the wave. That site will then send their direction solution to a central system.  All sites in the cluster will report their solutions and the central system will calculate where the object is.

In time, we will be able to increase the sensitivity of the detection system. The more sensitive the system the better chance we can “listen” for transient gravity waves.  Most objects in space are fairly stationary, in a relative sense, to us. We can soon identify all the larger waves that will come from one particular direction (like distant stars or black holes).

A space craft, asteroid or comet would be moving across the spectrum. Also this is probably more than a single wave, so successive waves will hit different parts of the sensor over time. Most stars would probably hit the same sensor. A comet or asteroid would, over time transit across the sensor giving a track to follow.

Assuming that space craft would need to be at higher speeds than a comet or asteroid, to make space travel feasible, they would quickly pass along the sensor head. While we could not really catch them in real time, we could tell of their passage.

This system probably could not detect craft too far away from our system, due to background noise. If a craft passed half way through the Oort Cloud, it would take almost 140 days for the gravity wave to get near earth. Our Oort Cloud goes out 1-2 light years which might or might not be a navigation hazard for interstellar travel.

The good news is that we probably can track an object coming into our solar system. With gravity waves traveling at light speed and assuming a craft would have to slow down their approach into the solar system, we should get a “hit” on our Gravity Direction Finding system before they show up.

I guess the worse thing would be to see a lot of UFOs come into the Kuiper Belt, stop for a short time, then move on. Boy that would be a massive hit on our self-confidence. Aliens find us boring.

So while we wait to see if E.T. has an interstellar highway near us, we can always use this to track asteroids and comets. A noble cause and something near and dear to most of us.

I have started another universe based on an idea I have had about an alien race coming to Earth and “uplifting” us to a space faring race.  Some would say why would anyone ever do something like that.  Most people are not that kind. Ah, but what if its not really out of kindness but because they have a need?

This novel will start with the aliens telling us why they are giving us a hand up. Let me know what you think?

Saviors

They came as civilizers, they said. Ya, civilization always screws the natives. In this case, we, humanity, are the natives. The Valodars came 10 years ago to much fanfare. Acting all high and mighty, they first tried to change us by appealing to our nobler side. Well, we never really were good at listening. So they then forced our primitive cultures to stop warring and fall under a one world government.

That showed us their true nature. They can kick ass with the best of em. They did a good job of destroying most of our military forces in a quick and violent set of strikes. Before we even knew what hit us, we were trashed and at their mercy. They then brought down their armored troops and made us see the errors of our ways.

Ya, civilized. The more civilized one gets the more violent the destruction they reap.

But then the Valodars or squidlies as we started to call them, shocked the shit out of us. Once they forced us into a one world government of their choosing, they started to teach us their technology. In the 6 years since our “education” began, we have been given warp capabilities, alright they call it phased translocation. But it still seems like Star Trek.

They helped us build star ships that could move around the solar system in hours. They gave us powerful propulsion systems, artificial gravity, nano technology, many wonderful technologies. They showed us how we can control these systems with our minds.

We have sent explorer ships to the neighboring stars and have found planets that could support life. We were planning on colonies light years away. Building space stations and habitats on the other planets in our system, Sol.

These were heady times. Man had found a true friend that freed us from our terrestrial bonds.

Or so we thought.

Worm Hole Earth: Worm Holes

A discussion on how worm holes are used in my universe. While many Sci-Fi writers use faster than light (FTL) type technologies, I have decided make that fairly unobtainable to humanity. In this way, MAN, has to take the slow route of ships traveling to other stars but once they arrive they drop off a worm hole ring that can then provide instantaneous travel between the linked worm holes.  I hope you like it.

Scientists discovers how to make mini black holes. In time, they learn how to create wormholes based on the knowledge they gained from quantum entanglement and black hole generation. They need a lot of power to create this connection and use solar collector stations to get the required power. What they create we call PT Rings or Poltan Transfer Rings, named after Daniel Poltan that discovered them.

In the early days of the Republic of Man, wormholes were sparsely used and their usage was severely controlled. In the imperial age, wormholes were used everywhere. It could be said that wormholes or ‘rings’ were as pervasive as nanites.

Rules of PT Rings:

  • PT Rings can not travel through each other.
  • PT Ring thresholds block all types of non physical wavelengths unless passing through a physical conduit (need to pass a cable through the hole to pass power or communications). A laser can not be fired from one side to another.. unless it has a physical “barrel” that extends through the horizon.
  • PT Rings are bi-directional as long as the same square inch is not trying to pass something from both sides..

Rings are so pervasive that it is said most citizens of the Solarian Empire have passed through a ring at least once in their life by the age of 5. Most cities in the core of the Empire and Federation have large Ring Hubs that interconnect the city to locations around the galaxy. With the advent of zones, due to the Rage plague of 3097, control over connectivity between zones was strictly enforced.

Rings are used to pass communications, people, ships and cargo. For communications, fiber or wired connections are used with one terminus of a link on each side of the Ring. Every city in the Empire was linked together with only some of the Frontier systems connected by a manual gateway function. This was mostly due to security rather than technological reasons.

Private company and personal rings were still allowed but they have to be approved by the government and installed by the Guild. They were also monitored and controlled by the guild at the behest of the government. The reasons go back again to the Rage plague that threatened the Federation. Then, over one billion sentient beings were killed, infected or left for dead. 15 habitable worlds were quarantined and will never be traveled to again. Each of these worlds have large numbers of automated defense systems that will warn then shoot anything trying to leave the surface or go to the surface. Most of those worlds were infected because of private ring connections.

The Solarian Empire is especially dependent on the ring network. While the Union started to return back to a more system centric lifestyle and other members of the Federation never took to the flexibility of the Rings the way that MAN did, the Empire took the amount of ring usage to the next level. Building dependencies on Ring connections for almost everything. From redundant power supplies coming from different parts of the Empire, to food production systems being located in systems light years from habitable worlds or the military arming many of their ships with almost exclusive Ring weapons.

It is said that most races can live without the Ring network just isolated from its different systems. The Empire could not exist without the Ring network. Billions would starve or have no power without the rings. On the other hand, no enemy can reduce an Imperial System through a siege or the defenders running out of power, arms or people. Imperial Systems are considered near impregnable because of this interconnectedness they have built.

The Empire has sprinkled its bases, stations and services over so many systems, it is considered impossible to defeat them. At almost every system they own, the Empire builds Rings that are then shipped to other parts of the Empire to further integrate their network of connections. Only the Frontier worlds are not as connected because of their remoteness. Even these systems have 40-100 connections after the first 20 years of colonization. Everything from spaceborne transportation, communications, planet side transportation to military Ring Weapons, communications and gateways.

The military is said to have rings in the outer Oort could of all systems in the Empire in case the system is attacked. These rings are nearly impossible to detect because they are unmanned stations with minimal power used to just keep the wormhole open and the systems operational. These stations have many more rings shrunk down to a meter size that is used by ring weapons. If ships need to go through the ring, they come thru and then load up ring weapons then proceed into the system.

As the Empire grows larger and larger and with the meeting of the ZAN in 3149, scientists realized that worm holes required more power the farther they go. When the Empire built the Zanium powered ship the ARK and sent it 50,000 light years across the galaxy, they sent rings with it. Luckily the Ring and Explorer guilds expected an increase in power to keep the wormholes open and made sure the links had extra capacity. It was not enough for all the rings. Of the 5000 rings (for ring weapons and transport) sent with the ARK on her jump, 2000 winked out of existence on rematerializing in normal space.

Noting this, the Empire dedicated small red dwarf systems to just powering these rings. Ten systems were selected around the Empire to be power systems of these far away ring connections. While normal power stations had 1000 sq miles of collectors. These new systems would interconnect and cover approximately 10 million sq miles of surface area around these stars. Normally that might be an impact to the systems life but these stars were picked for their lack of life.

Worm Hole Earth Background – Habitable Planet Structures

Today I will discuss some of the structures that are found on habitable planets in my Worm Hole Earth universe. These are structures of the Republic of Man, Solarian Empire and a brief discussion about those in the Union.

After the war, the Republic of Man started to build cities underground. This was deemed necessary because of the radiation in the environment from the war and to protect it’s citizens and industry, since there were still other nations. Once the Republic was able to move most of their citizens underground the other nations either surrendered to the Republic or became even more xenophobic towards outsiders.

These cities were miles underground and were divided into large caverns over 10 miles wide and 200 feet high. They were created by the use of high powered lasers melting the rock and reforming it into a layered material they called Sodar. This Sodar was so strong it was used to line the caverns, build the internal structures and the large mega structures the Republic built on the surface.

While the caverns were large and open, the Republic knew they could not abandon the surface. The large mega structures were built to be recreational center. They stood up to 1 mile high with a 10 mile wide base that narrowed to half a mile at the top. With the use of Sodar, these structures became whimsical monuments to man’s ingenuity. Each city would try to outdo the last.

These structures were built with a further 2 mile wide belt around them that was enclosed in a 500 foot tall, 200 ft thick wall. Within the wall was parks, golf courses, lakes, pools, sports facilities and other amusements. Outside of the walls was left to nature to rebuild itself or in the future to grow unhindered by the hands of man.

The underground cities had many of these caverns. Each cavern was called a CENTER and many of these Centers were connected via central tubes. In the early days of the Republic, some Centers were used for Industry and Agriculture but as man learned the technologies necessary to live in space, these functions were moved to space infrastructure.

During the time of the Solarian Empire, massive space stations were used for food production while most industry was performed on non-inhabited planets/moons or stations. Habitable planets would never have industry or agriculture ever again. With the wormhole networks, food was grown throughout the known space and shipped to thousands of planets.

The Empire always built underground cities, believing in the protection it afforded its citizens and the desire to keep the surfaces of planets for recreation. Besides the open areas around the mega structures, man would occasionally build resort areas around specifically beautiful areas. Sometimes these areas of beauty were space based and resort space stations were made.

The Union eventually started to build cities under the skies of their planets. While the Empire developed nuSky, which were massive screens placed at the tops of the caverns and used to create a sky view. The cities on the surface had what mother nature gave as a view, nuSky cities could have whatever sky they wanted. Many times they would project what the surface above them looked like but other times they would provide other planet views or whimsical views. The creators of nuSky views became famous and highly sought after for their visions and skill in creating a realistic view.

One of the advantages of the Empire was that using Universal Standard Time, all underground cities throughout the Empire could be synced to the same time. If you wake up at 6am and travel to your office 1000 light years away, you still arrive around 9am for work. Cities on the surface do not have that advantage so some people in the Union would wake up in the middle of their night to get to work on another planet or system. Because of this annoying reality, around 2900 CE, the Union started to go back to a more planet and city type of lifestyle. Industry and agriculture were had in system or on the planet. Sometimes these would be done underground as well.

Regardless of which human polity, cities on planets were powered by geothermal systems. Man found that enclosed geothermal power systems were the best. Water loss was less than .001% per year and the power was clean. Vast geothermal sinks were dropped to near the crustal plate to where temperatures were over 800 degrees to heat the water.

There were two major Center plans. One plan would build concentric zoning rings. The outer wall of the caverns are housing units about 6 stories high, then a ring of schools and retail outlets. The next ring is entertainment and finally business centers near the central tube system. There would be small bus or tram lines every few degrees that would feed into hubs in the Entertainment Zone. In later years, these would have a ring that goes to the city’s Ring Hub. Additional lines would go between hubs in the Center’s Entertainment Zone or towards the central tube. A transportation component would be within a 20 minute walk from anywhere.

The second plan would zone the Center into a pie shape. Larger slices of the pie would be housing or business and smaller ones entertainment or retail. This design also tried to have the same type of transportation layout.

Even the Union’s surface settlements tried to stay true to the Center layouts since the same groups designed and built both. For one, it would allow citizens to move between locations and have a good idea of how the layout would be. The second main reason was the efficiency of the design. The hub and spoke design of the in Center transportation allowed for anybody to catch a bus, train, tram or ring in less than 20 minutes from almost anywhere in the urban area.

Other Center designs were built to handle special requirements. Some cities had dedicated Entertainment Centers (like amusement parks) or Special Resort Centers. While there were surface Entertainment and Resort locations, those were mostly dependent on mother nature. These underground Centers would be available year round as the environment was controlled. Large amusement parks were built, capable of being visited by anyone in the Federation. While some Resort Centers were built to replicate an ocean, natural or mythical land; others were massive zoos that had animals from around the galaxy. Instead of actually bringing the animals to these zoos, scientists and drones would follow these animals and then a 3D projection of the animal’s life and its environment was created for visitors. This immersion was better than that received from the MindNet because the sounds, smells and environment could be experienced.

While all heavy industry and most large business centers are off-world from a habitable planet, Many people telecommute to work with large numbers never leaving their Center or city. Depending on the the job, most can telecommute 2-3 times a week. Most of the business in a Center is related to servicing the home or telecommuter. Almost no one works in their homes, since with the MindNet, connectivity to the home is not really required. Home connections center around the Home Computer system.

This is not a computer like today but the House AI. Due to the restrictions on AI, these are stunted systems that are basically a system foundation with some basic behaviors. Additional behaviors are added to it as the person acquires services or systems. An example, when a person buys a new food preparation system they get a behavior model that is loaded into the House AI. This will tell the owner what can be done with the system. The House AI is connected to a central monitoring system that will check to make sure that the House AI has not be tampered with.

These house networks are connected to service providers and Center security networks. Long ago the war with hacker and AI made it necessary to separate networks that are gatewayed with human-AI hybrid systems watching the interactions. MindNet is used to interface with the House AI but in a limited scripted manner.

Worm Hole Earth – Timeline Part 3

So the third timeline installment.  To see all of them please go select the TAG timeline.  I hope you like it. I will use this timeline and other things I put together to build my sci-fi universe.  Please comment.

2319 Alpha Centauri Prime colony is established. The planet’s surface was found suitable for earth cohabitation but superstorms were extremely deadly with winds going over 200 miles an hour. The native plant and animal species have adapted ways to handle these storms. Man has to live underground with visits to the surface. Like their Earth counterparts, Man builds large superstructures on the surface and surrounds them with high walls. Inside the structures are plants and gardens of Earth while outside is the native varieties. Three population zones are inhabited with another two being built around three economic zones where all the consortiums and guilds set up shop. Elsewhere in the system, the mining guilds start mining the belts and the agro-consortiums set up space stations for food production.
2326 The Hyun-Sumi Shipbuilding Guild builds the first world encompassing industry in the Barnard’s Star system. There were three planets with two being medium gas giants like Neptune and one being an ice world outside of the habitable zone. The Hyundai Guild purchased a 500 year lease on the system, a first for a guild since mostly the consortiums take over systems. They built a large ship building facility encompassing half the planet (about the size of Mercury). Needing superconducting systems to build these ships, the planet’s temperature at -170F eased the requirements. Using large underground building docks with J-Rings to provide gravity the shipbuilders opened up shop. To reduce their costs, they lease out the systems mineral rights in the asteroid belt to the Rio Vale Mining Consortium. With PT Rings, the Guild built a transport hub in the planet’s only habitation Center to allow workers to commute from their home worlds to work on a daily basis.
2328 A mutiny on three frigates and the command station on Bernard’s star occurs. The local commander was a harsh disciplinarian and went too far when he instituted lashing a well liked junior officer on the Republic of Man Frigate Hammon. The fourth frigate remained loyal to the government but was driven off by the other three frigates into the outer reaches of Kuiper belt of the system. The mutiny also took over the unfinished industrial stations being built on the 5th planet (ice ball mercury size). the and the central hub. The mutineers blocked the PT ring and started to negotiate with Republican officials so the system was cut off. Luckily the Tri-free Industrial Consortium had already had delivered a few rings a year ago for quick access to their systems. Two were configured and taken over by the mutineers while one was in storage. The quick thinking of Chief Miner Tuni and his crew got the ring out of the storage facility and onto a runner to head towards the moon, Anvil, of the 5th planet, Miters Point. There was a small consortium research center there that was unmanned for the last year (after their mission of determining moon composition). The crew accessed the station and sent through messages. Knowing little of how a PT ring works and only that its distant end was probably in storage they kept trying to get attention of someone on the other side. After a week of trying, finally the PT Ring grew to the size of a personnel ring and Consortium security came through the ring. The Chief advised them of what was going on and the ring was turned over to the military. Initially the military sent through some marines to set up listening posts on the moon to find out where the mutineers were. Negotiations were going bad and it was decided to use the ring they have to take the system back. The marines took the ring into space near the dark side of the moon away from the planet when it was on the other side from the mutineers and made the ring into a space based ring. Thru the ring came Task Force Hammer, 2 dreadnoughts and 10 frigates. There were no ring weapons on these ships because of the ring thru ring limitation but the firepower was overwhelming. The mutineers quickly gave up and the system was restored to the Republic. After this incident, the military discovered the value of having other space based rings in or near the system with the extra rings for ring weapons. All systems would get one or two space rings in the outer system with enough rings for mounting on ships as they came through the rings. These forces would be independent of the system forces and their locations kept secret.
2389 The Republic of Man has habitats in 8 systems and has expanded its reach out 25 Light Years. There are another 20 systems that could support life on a planet but most of those are currently being researched. The Republic’s core law for space is to do not destroy life already on other planets.
2397 Mars is colonized as an Earth like planet with a breathable atmosphere. The gravity is a little light compared to Earth but it is determined that people can live there easily. Like Earth, Mars’ colonies will be underground with the surface left to be a nature reserve with only the cities’ mega structures as evidence that Man is there.
2409 Venus’s temperature has been brought down to the point where it can start terraforming.
2481 The Republic is out to 50+ light years and has 37 habitable systems. A crisis is occurring regarding how systems are represented. The numbers of representatives is starting to become unwieldy yet many wish for the current system to remain while others are wanting to see changes. Three major factions develop with two wanting changes but not the same. Over the last twenty years these factions have been solidifying their support base within systems with the occasional violence to supporters of other factions. In the Procylon system, an uprising occurs on Procylon III that takes over 5 of the 9 cities on the planet. They cut off PT ring travel and require the system Governor to call in the Army to retake the cities. One of the cities, Versparo, becomes a bloodbath as the Royalist party had many supporters in the city and they fought block by block with the Army. Further instigation was the desertion of a few of the army units to the Royalists and a few other units refusing to fire on the civilians. Eventually the uprising was put down but the separation between parties became even greater.
2483 The Republic civilian and military leadership realize the problems from the Procylon III uprising and institute measures to make sure military units are not all one party or from one system. A few senior line officers are sacked due to political declarations. This further disgruntles the remaining military and the political parties.
2484 Unbeknownst to the general Republic government, the Royalists have garnered massive support in 20 systems and launch a coup. Three of the 5 Interstellar bases of the Navy, 1 of the 3 Army interstellar bases and the Marines join the Royalists. Of the remaining loyal forces, a smaller portion in the newer systems in the Eta Leporis region decide that they would break off from the Republic. They shut off all PT Rings leading to any other system and have over 50 frigates and 2 dreadnoughts to their fleet. One of their systems, Eta Leporis, had a large military fortress station that could service ring weapons. They create the Union Eta Leporis and declare themselves out of the fight. The Royalists and Republicans fight many pitched battles in certain star systems.
2486 The last Republican stronghold of Tau Ceti is defeated and Emperor Rinar the Sure is coronated. Rinar was the candidate for the position based on all the remaining Royalists and the military leadership. As a gesture of goodwill, he offers peace to the Union Eta Leporis and accepts they are a separate entity.
2487 The peace treaty is ratified with divisions of how space will be divided, have been accepted by both parties. The Empire agrees not to continue their growth in the space going in the direction of the Union. The Union agrees to only grow in that direction. The division is accepted for 200 years at which time both may compete for territories in any direction. With the PT rings, contiguous space is not necessary. Trade is allowed with Luyten’s Star and L347-14, called Rinar’s Peace, being the two neutral zones. Both sides are allowed to have a space ring and small military station with a central rotational station as the trade zone. The Empire polices and manages the station and space for Rinar’s Peace and the Union does the same for Luyten’s Star. No activity outside of coming and going to the trade station or authorized transiting ships are allowed in the system. All other wormhole communications have been cut off except a communications on link betwen Sol and Eta Leporis for military and political communications only.
2491 Emperor Rinar decrees Universal Standard Time (UST). All Imperial cities and stations will use UST. Local time can also be used but work schedules and inter planetary communications/entertainment would be in UST. Since the majority of the population lives underground, they can not see what the surface is about. Standardizing the time frame allows for more economic activity. City and station nu-sky is timed to UST.
2537 Word arrives that the Union has met an alien civilization, in Cygni A system. The aliens, known as the WERZU to the Union, are a new to space travel race of humanoids with four arms, three eye stalks omnivores. They have only their home planet and small outposts on their 3 moons. They do not use radio communcations but have a form of telepathy to communicate. The Union explorer did not see them in their initial scans and when the science ships came in they were detected by the WERZU. Instead of leaving the system they met the aliens. Trade has been established and the WERZU were allowed to set up trade and an embassy with the Empire. Since social ties between the Union and Empire are good, the Union allowed the Empire to purchase some rings from them and to have a star in the Union as the Empire hub for access to the WERZU. So the Union built two ring pairs one from, Wagner, the Empire’s name for their new system, to the WERZU system and another pair between Wagner and the Empire.
It would take 30 more years before the connection was fully established but the Union allowed communications in the mean time.

Worm Hole Earth – Timeline part 2

While working on my published book’s movie script, I sometimes come back to my Sci-Fi universe. Part of this is building the background of how the universe works and here is part two of the timeline for my universe. One day I will make a massive timeline post for all but for now, just small easy to digest pieces.

 

The first post was titled: Worm Hole Earth – SciFi Universe (posted Nov 16, 2014). Goes from 2014 to 2199. I have included the last two entries to this one.

 

2182 Worm hole technology operational. Poltan and team are killed by a massive solar flare. The station could not get out of the way in time due to the size of the flare. Afterwards the Republic decided to move the Solar Stations further out to have a better chance of avoiding solar flares. The stations are zoned to be near the orbit of Mercury instead of closer. Also these stations will be unmanned using a wormhole to pass the power to a distant space station where the worm holes will be created. It takes the stations about a full day to produce a wormhole pair. These wormholes are called Poltan Transfer Rings in honor of Daniel Poltan.
2199 The Republic of Man has built a PT Ring network around the inner solar system that includes Tranquil Sea City on the moon, all underground cities on Earth and Talos One and Two (orbiting space stations of over 30,000 people each in Earth Orbit.). Distant cities on earth are interconnected via a central hub station in orbit around earth at the same distance as the moon. This hub is on board Talos One and is designated as the hub for all non-direct connections. Some important centers are directly connected but most civilian travel is through Talos One. The military is building a separate network that does not include civilian connections. Scientist and Engineers have learned how to run additional power feeds from Solar stations to space-based infrastructure. Three Solar Stations are operational and feeding power to two Central Stations that then feed converted power to both Talos stations and a few asteroid mining colonies. Rocket ships are mostly removed from service as the PT Ring handles most transportation needs.
2215 The last of the “other” nations on earth have been integrated into the Republic of Man with the fall of the Nordic Federation. The Nordic Federation was created after the fall of the Western Alliance as most of those nations were not bombed. Prime Minister Lee of the Republic was assassinated during a visit in April and the Federation was destroyed by June. The new Prime Minister Mwansa, determined that this last standout had run its course and their integration into the Republic was at hand. The Federation’s military was no match for the Republic’s more advanced forces with shields, nor the kinetic weapons used from space to wipe out Federation military bases. The populations of the Federation were dispersed around the Republic. With the new cities planned in previous Federation land, a total of 80 cities around the world exist.
2219 The Republic builds the first star ship that is powered by an electrical plasma engine. The star ship, “Explorer” uses PT rings from two Central Stations to feed on board systems. Another PT ring is used by the crew to allow transport between ship and the first military star fortress in operation. With the PT ring fed engine, the ship can use constant acceleration to quickly speed their way to the outer planets. After shakedown cruises in the inner system, the Explorer class ship is assigned to production and additional ships are built. The Explorer makes travel from Talos Two to Mars in 8 days. While there are already existing PT Ring orbital stations above Mars, this speed brings back the idea of using star ships also for travel between sites. This would be especially useful for transporting of materials between orbital factories, asteroid belt mining colonies and other large volume transport needs. Republican Star Ship (RSS) Explorer makes the first journey to Neptune in 180 days. While the Republic has sent craft to further explore the outer planets, only Jupiter had a PT Ring orbital science station. It was considered not reliable enough to just use PT Rings. If a problem occurred on the Jupiter station it would take over 1 year to mount a rescue. Now with the new star ships a rescue could be there in one month if coming from Earth. The second PT Ring Guild is chartered on Talos Two, new routes are added to cities to satisfy more demand for travel.
2241 Terraforming of Mars commences. Previously Mars was studied for existing life. It was determined that the only life left on Mars was bacterial and that the planet would be re-designated as a terraformer. Venus is also considered a terraformer but scientists are still working on how to bring down the planet’s temperature. All Sol system planets have orbital stations. Mining in the Asteroid belt, Kuniper belt and Oort cloud has commenced. The “Scheffer” class of space mining ships have been commissioned by the 4 mining consortiums that are chartered to mine the Sol system. The “Scheffer” class ships are massive ships over 5 miles long and 3 miles in diameter. They have large bays forward that allow the ship to “swallow” asteroids or comets, lock them in place and then start mining them. Only the rear 1/3 of the ship has artificial gravity. There is a large PT Ring that feeds the broken down materials to an orbital industrial station. The ship drills stabilizing struts into the object then miners go out and break up the material. Large vacuum type systems suck all the lose material up and push it towards the PT Ring. These ships can scoop up 4-5 objects less than a mile wide and start tearing them apart. The crew gets changed out every 8 hours with another shift from the industrial station. No further mining on the Earth, Moon or Mars is allowed. All future mineral gains will need to come from space based sources. The people of the Republic have started to use PT Rings so much that many of the citizens commute to work within the Solar system on a daily basis. The Republic has also started growing large amounts of crop foods or doing animal husbandry on large orbital stations. These stations are not using the J-Rings but the older core spin model. Large 3-5 mile long tubular stations that spin. The plants or animals are kept in the spin modules.
2269 The idea of visiting other stars has taken root. Remote controlled ships manned and powered via PT Rings will be sent off towards all the closest stars. The closest one, Alpha Centauri, will take approximately 14 years to be reached. The “Galaxy” class remote controlled explorer class ships are commissioned to explore the stars. Each ship will have its PT Ring systems but will contain 10 additional PT Rings that will be dropped off in each system encountered. It is determined that each system will require between 2-3 rings. The goal is to have the ship fly to the targeted system, do an initial scan of system and drop off at least one PT ring for a fusion powered star ship to come through. The system explorers will check out the Galaxy class for any repairs that are needed. If the Republic plans on staying in the system, they will start passing through more in system ships and a space station. The engineers will put together a Solar station and a Central Hub to start building PT Rings locally. Also a fusion powered mining unit will come through to start gathering resources locally for the build out of the system. It takes the Galaxy class ships a year to get into position above the system’s plane and get up to 30% of Light Speed. It also takes them a year to slow back down and come back onto the target system’s plane at least a light month out of the system. This was done to allow the ships sensors to start recording system information before getting too close at high speed. It was determined that the shields they have, can handle small object collisions at this speed but not much more.
2287 Galaxy class explorer “New Horizon” arrives at Alpha Centauri to discover 8 planetary bodies orbiting the two stars. Many more plutonians are found in the Kuniper belt that surrounds the binary star system. Proxima Centauri was left alone and will be explored by a future explorer built by sources in Alpha Centauri since it is less than .2 light years from Alpha Centauri. The Republic sends through a fleet of in system explorers and stations to build Solar Stations around the brighter of the two stars. New Horizon drops off 4 PT Rings and continues on to Epsilon Indi in approximately 30 years.
2300 The Republic of Man has visited every star within a 10 Light Year range. Each system has a small military/science station, a solar station, Central Hub and at least a mining consortium station and mining ships. One of the interstellar PT rings acts as the ship gate for the system and the other two are split between the Military center and the Central Hub. As other PT Rings are manufactured locally, they are assigned to the other stations in system. The Red Dwarf stars in the M Class have proven quite valuable for resource mining. Sometimes they have planets or plutonians that are usually dead but worthy of mining. For systems that have potential to harbor life, the government declares them either Terraformers or Life Bearing. In these systems the government assigns a civil governor and a life habitat is planned.
2301 It is known that the Chibra Mining Consortium has built their headquarters on Lalande 21185, which they have renamed San Han. They had negotiated a 500 year lease from the government in 2301. On San Han III, they found a planet that has an atmosphere that is breathable and gravity about the same as Earth’s. There they will build their processing centers, storage facilities and business centers. Above in space they already made plans for a large fleet facility and mineral receiving facility. The original Ring Guild, the Poltan Ring Guild, was apparently commissioned to build rings for San Han as their newly commissioned ring making ship was seen transiting to this system.
2313 The Republic of Man has built space stations to study planets in 9 of the surrounding star systems. While in 5 of these systems, the planet is outside of the habitable zone of the star, the planets have active volcanism that ensure the geothermal method of powering cities is possible. These systems will have short scientific study periods and have underground cities created to foster colonies for humanity. While these planets will not foster life on the surface they are havens for humanity in case Sol is destroyed.
2315 The InterStellar Transport Guilds are chartered to build Nebula class ships that will be used for worm hole transportation between stars. The Nebula class is like the Galaxy class but with a crew compartment and fusion engines. These are used for moving between star systems via the PT Ring network. When they get to their destination they are fitted with rings for power and remote control. With the connectivity of 30+ star systems and more coming every year, the idea that a vast interconnected network of worm holes is needed. No particular system being removed from the network will cause any particular system to be cut off from humanity. Worm hole production will be developed in many of these star systems with the Ring Guilds controlling production and deployment. They will work with the PT Ring Transport Guilds and InterStellar Guilds to determine where hubs are and where the InterStellar Guilds need to pick up worm holes.
