From the Web: Another Explanation of Fermi’s Paradox that sounds wrong to me.

Happy New Year.  My first post of 2017!  Here’s to hoping for a good year.

As I usually do when I want to write my novels, I stare at my computer until I get the urge to write or look at Facebook or something.  This morning, Facebook won out.  I found a post about Brian Cox explanation of Fermi’s Paradox.  Another article talking about how all aliens must destroy themselves before they break free of their home planet.

I have addressed how I feel this is wrong in this previous post, so I will not dwell on those reasons here. Of course; I, like them, have no clue whether aliens exist or not. We have no substantiated proof either way, yet.  It is all conjecture.  But what fun this is!

To me, these arguments for self-destruction is superimposing our behavior on any alien race that might exist. While I believe this is a very possible outcome for the human race.  I do not believe that means all intelligent races will do the same.

Look at other examples on Earth. Bees for example.  How do they expand? Do they grab every possible hive location as soon as possible?  Do they constantly war with themselves? They do have their cold-blooded aspects but not like us. Bees expand, or swarm, when they have grown large enough that they can not “smell” the queen. When a hive is so large that the queen’s pheromones can not reach all members in the hive, those members not ‘under her spell’ make a new queen. When she is born, the old queen flies off with a portion of the workers.

A hive grows larger because it has produced enough food to allow the colony to successfully grow.  So instead of producing swarms that go out and just find land, they do it when they are over populated.  Could an alien race act like this?  Why not?

Another example could be the big cats or wolves. Normally they also do not go out and grab all they can grab. They keep their territory unless resources are scarce.

Why would aliens not have a similar behavior? Why would we think that aliens would make their main goal of exploration of everything?  Why wouldn’t they just explore their immediate surroundings, find a few places and settle in for a while to develop these resources.

Within 10 light years of Sol (our solar system) there are 15 known stellar objects (stars and red/brown dwarf stars). These are the ones we know of.  The last being discovered in 2014, with a few more found since 2010. This leads me to believe there might be at least double this number in this space.  If there are 30 systems in this small space, that is a lot of exploration for us to undertake.  Each one requiring a mission to be set up, speed up and slow down of the craft on the way, communications between the stars, etc..  That is a lot of resources.  And we still have problems on earth that are priorities.

Within 100 light years of Sol, there are over 500 known G type stars (ones we can see as a twinkle of light in the night’s sky).  In the 10 light year range, only 2 of them are G type. So if we take a similar ratio of dwarf stars to G types, in 100 light years range there might be 2500 stars.  Include even fainter ones, like we are discovering still in 10 light year range, and that might be 5000 or more.  Again think of all the trip planning and particulars of the trip to get to all of them.

Humans seem to have the wanderlust that makes them always go over the horizon. That doesn’t seem to be a trait of most of our fellow species of Earth. Why would aliens act more like us and not more like one of the other species of Earth?

Additionally, there are so many resources in this solar system, why would we need to go elsewhere? Yes for humans, its wanderlust.  If the species was not prone to wanderlust, when would they need to move?  When they have exhausted the resources of a solar system?  How long would it take for us to mine out this system?  It has been 5000 years of recorded time and we still have not mined out the resources of Earth. What about the moon? asteroids? Mars? Jupiter and her moons? etc…

If a race takes 1000 years to exhaust the resources of an entire star system and thus requiring the aliens to move on.  It would take this race 30,000 years to exhaust the 10 light year range from Sol.  With the Milky Way galaxy being 100,000 light years wide, it would take this race 30 million years to strip a 10 light year wide strip from one end to the other.

To do this for a 1000 light year wide strip, it would take 3 billion years. That would still leave the vast majority of the galaxy untouched and that is a quarter the age of the galaxy. So even if we had a locust acting race out there, chances are, the galaxy is just too big to swallow.

A thought on Fermi’s Paradox

With the idea that our world is probably not so unique among the millions of star systems and billions of planets, in the Milky Way alone. The chances of there being other intelligent races is pretty good.

Also we tend to discover something mind-blowing every decade or so. Things we had no idea existed a generation ago (atoms, quarks, types of planets around other stars, DNA, etc..) are a reality today.

Having said that, I believe there are many alien civilizations in our neighborhood of the Milky Way and faster than light (FTL) travel is possible. We just aren’t there yet.

Many ask. “Why don’t the aliens visit us?”  Well let’s be honest and put the ego aside. We really are not that special are we??  If an alien race has discovered how to travel between the stars in a time frame that is acceptable to them, then what are we to them?  A pre-contact Amazonian tribe?

How many of us are rushing to go say hi to those that remain? Yes, we like to see the occasional article about them and maybe a National Geographic special or a Youtube video but really how often do we think of them?  Please realize this is not to denigrate these tribes, just using as an example we might understand.

If there are millions of earth like planets in our galaxy, then aliens coming here for our resources is probably an idea that should only exist in Hollywood. Humans are the resource they want, you say?  Okay why? We are rather frail, we can not exist easily in many other environments, we are rather annoying and hard to keep in line. Wouldn’t a prospective overlord race think that robots would be better choice of labor than these little meat bags?

They want to rule us you think?  I would imagine before they “pushed the button” they would investigate us for a while. Especially since we do not have the technology to detect them. Once they watch us for a while, what do you think?  Would any self-respecting conquering race try to bring a bunch of psychopathic, inventive short lived creatures into their empire?

With the ability to gain any resource anywhere else in the galaxy and us being primitives, what value would we serve?  Also we tend to fight ourselves and not just for mating, we are really good at killing each other. Why bring such a crazy race into your empire with the chance they might infect others or God forbid, learn new technologies where they might challenge the established rule.

No, if anything it would be best to watch us.  Like we do the Amazonian tribes with fly overs. Keep an eye on us. See if we kill off ourselves or actually learn how to work together and get into space. Then they can take us over or if not the conquering type, they might welcome us to the neighborhood.

“We should hear their signals.” One might say.  Well think on it.  We have only been broadcasting roughly 100 years. In that time most of our communications is now via the internet (land lines mostly), mobiles (short range) and satellite (directed communications). Most broadcast medias are being replaced. There is talk of quantum communications, where there is no signal path.  With us doing this in 100 years and still have barely left our planet, what do you think a race that can go between stars is capable of?

Most likely to hear another civilization, we would have to catch them in the first 200 years of their space age. After that, then the chances for them to emit radio waves for us to pick up will drop off significantly.

What we might be able to watch their graviton emissions from spaceships flying near our solar system. We have recently figured out how to measure gravitons. Now it is just for the truly big objects in the Universe. In time we might refine that ability. If the aliens use big ships, then chances are they will cause a disturbance in the gravitational waves as they fly by, snapping their versions of pictures at the primitives.

Like the tribes people looking up at the sound of an airplane and wondering which Gods they might be and what would happen if they come to visit. We will hopefully one day track a graviton emission passing our solar system at speeds well above the normal stellar objects. We too will wonder what god-like beings are doing that and what does that forebode for us, if they decide to stop and say hi.

 

Short Story: “Detection Lost.”

With the innovation that allows us to detect gravitational waves, new things will be discovered. Maybe………..

2052 AD The mission control room was silent. Everyone was watching the main monitors, as the last of the Cosmic Interferometer Gravitational Directional Array (CIGDA)nodes was to report taking its position. This node was the furthest out, at 80 million km. The other eleven nodes had already reached their position. The last a few hours before this node.

The feed the controllers were watching was almost five minutes in the past due to the distance light had to travel. Government and civilian officials were on hand besides the mission control room team. These worthies were up in the visitor’s box. Out of the way of those that actually worked but near enough to see when the last node linked up.

Doctor Tanya Hirano was extremely nervous, staring intently at Jay Garrett’s back. He was the Director of Node Communications, responsible for ensuring the direction finding system actually worked. From a technical perspective. Doctor Hirano was the brains behind the use of gravitational waves to detect space object movement.

The idea had been in Sci-Fi for nearly a hundred years. With the dream of detecting gravitational waves becoming a reality in 2016. All that was left was for refinement of the detecting method and for someone to come up with the means to detect things. James Grimm, a writer in 2016, came up with the basic method.

Many of the control room engineers were staring at Lena Romano. She was monitoring the communications from Node Omega, the twelfth node. She turned to Jay and smiled with a thumbs up. Tanya was watching and saw the signal. She could breath again.

Turning back to the assembled officials. “Thirty-six years ago, in 2016, detecting gravitational waves became a reality. In that year, an unknown Sci-Fi writer, published a story about using gravitational waves to detect interstellar traveling objects.”

She walked to the podium and looked back down at Jay to see if things were still going as planned. Jay, smiled back at her, nodded his head. She continued, “By creating a group of twelve receivers and linking them back to a correlation engine on Earth, we will be able to determine the direction of massive objects many light years away and smaller objects much closer. Additionally, we should be able to further identify and track objects much further out in our solar system.”

Jay turned back to his team and via the speaker in the visitor’s room, Tanya and the others could hear him. “Alright team, let’s sync them up.”

Everyone was silent, while the large viewing screens in the control room displayed large bars with each node’s name above one of the bars. Tanya turns down the speaker volume and turns towards the crowd, “We are now trying to sync each of the nodes to the core. The core, here in Tokyo, is sending out sequenced messages to each of the nodes. The nodes time stamp the receiving of these messages and then send back the resulting time stamp. They will do this a few hundred times until the core has a sufficient number to build the off set time difference between each node and the core. Once that is done a few time samplings of what the nodes are hearing will be sent back for further sync analysis. When the core believes it has all nodes properly sync’d up, then we will start recording what we hear.”

A military officer in the crowd asks, “How long will this take Doctor?”

“We should be sync’d in approximately fifteen minutes.”

A news reporter off to the side asks, “Doctor, is it true we will hear aliens?” A polite laugh from the crowd.

Not missing a beat, Tanya responds, “That was one of the questions we wanted to answer. If the aliens are traveling in large mass ships, at a high percentage of the speed of light, we should be able to detect them. If close enough.”

“How close Doctor?” Another news person. Everyone was quiet and interested in her responses.

“We estimate we can detect a million ton object three light years away. That would put it almost near Alpha Centauri.”

“A million tons? That is about 4 USS Trump class aircraft carriers.” Said one of the US Admirals in the crowd. All the news people were furiously writing down or speaking into their recorders.

One of the Chinese diplomats came forth. In an exasperated voice, “Doctor, do you really believe this is possible? My government believes this project was a waste of money and hearing this nonsense is further insult.”

Taking a calming breath, Tanya responded, “Ambassador Xi, the Chinese government’s position is well known. It has also agreed to wait and see what is produced before further comments. Correct?”

In the background, the display on the viewing screen blinked a few times. Before Ambassador Xi could respond, Tanya turned the volume back up, on the speaker, since Jay was talking. “…chronization has completed and now we are recording live data. The viewing screen will start to display all objects, as we get hits. Over time these objects will have their data refined when we detect more waves against them.”

The screen changed to a display of the solar system with large blips coming from all over the place. Every planet and the Sun had large blips over them, along with the asteroid belt. The Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud were large glowing rings of overlapping blips. As was most of interstellar space. The crowd was bubbling with comments among themselves. Even Ambassador Xi was excitedly talking to one of his assistants.

Tanya spoke over the crowd, into a mic, “Congratulations Doctor Garrett and team.” “Congratulations Doctor Hirano.” Responded Jay as the control room cheered.

Back to the crowd, Tanya continued, “Over the next few weeks we expect to have the solar system completely mapped out. The CIGDA Ring, as we are affectionately calling it, covers 100 million square kilometers. The closer an object is, the higher the frequency of the gravitational waves. The farther the object, the lower the frequency. Additionally, other characteristics tell us how massive the object is.”

The representative of the European Confederacy spoke up, “Congratulations Doctor, you did it. When will we all be able to get feeds off the data?”

US Admiral McKinley responded, “First we need to refine the data before passing to all the signatories.”

An argument erupted over the American attempt to control the data flow. Tanya looked at the previously happy officials, now in a heated argument over who gets the data. Shaking her head at the lunacy of these control freaks. The data should be for everyone, she thought.

Looking at the viewing monitors, How can you hold this data secret, it will benefit the world. The newsies were floating around the edge of the arguing officials, trying to get sound bites of the juicy, newsworthy comments and insults. The world had become more peaceful but just barely.

Watching some of the blips become more solid, Tanya was mesmerized by the objects. Let the idiots argue, they can not ruin my day. Looking down at Jay, she saw him smiling at her, shrug his shoulders and turn back to one of the engineers.

She realized the speaker was still on so the control room engineers could hear the bickering going on in the visitor’s room. She turned off the speaker, causing many of the engineers to look up at her. She shrugged her shoulders too, a few engineers smiled then returned to their work. The bickering continued unabated. You said, we said, we paid, etc…

It was the one blot on an otherwise fantastic day for her. She had spent ten years arguing for and selling this idea. Now, here it was. The tracks kept clogging the screen up with only a few becoming more defined. In time, she thought.

Then one track in the upper right corner of the map caught her eye. It moved. Things should not be moving this soon. Over weeks yes, unless it was a Near Earth object. She continued to concentrate on that object, while the crowd argued and the control room engineers worked their consoles.

It moved again!

Tanya was thinking, The team should be noticing this. Maybe no one is thinking of anything at this time. We all thought it would take weeks to clear up the pictures beyond the local planets. She looked at the station that was responsible for tracking fast moving objects. The person was talking to his neighbor.

She looked up again and the object was no longer where she expected. What happened to it? She searched around the region of the screen, finally seeing it as it moved to another spot.

Quickly moving to a console in the visitor’s room, she started to enter her credentials. Some in the room stopped bickering to watch her. Assuming she will present a new view for them. Others continued the argument with gusto.

Getting into the system, she started the viewing application and entered the object’s number. The main view screen cleared away all the blips less that one. Which moved again. Now replaced with 1321g1.

The room was silent as everyone was wondering what this object was. The control room went silent too. Jay reacted quicker than most, knowing Tanya well as they worked together most of these last ten years. Also as lovers, she had told him her desire to really find evidence of aliens. He hoped she was onto something and not desiring to see things that could be a detriment for her future career.

He started to shout orders to the engineers to start recording and evaluating the object being concentrated on.

“Doctor, what are you doing and what does this mean?” Asked one of the officials.

Not turning around to see who talked, “This object has already moved seven times since we recorded it. It is close but not sure how close.”

Another person, “Could this be a Near Earth Object? Should we worry?”

The object moved again, 1321h1.

Seeing the speaker light, she turned on the control room speaker. Still not answering the speaker. “Yes Jay?”

“Doctor Hirano, preliminary estimates are projecting this object at 15 million tons and about one light year away.”

The object’s track was displayed and it seemed to be cutting across the inside corner of the Oort cloud. A few more tracks and it would be off the view of this screen. Tanya was doing the calculations in her head but wanted to hear it from the core.

“What is the speed?”

Jay turned to another engineer and as they were calculating, the object updated.

Jay turned to Tanya with shock on his face. Hitting the mic button, “It was traveling at approximately 30% of the speed of light. But it stopped.”

Noise erupted behind Tanya. Everyone was trying to ask her what was meant by that and what was going on. She tried to signal for quiet and after a few minutes she finally achieved it.“The number 1321 is the object number. The letter is the number of instances the track has moved around. We built the system to only update this when an object moves more than ten million miles relative to its last position. This ensures we are not getting crazy with the movement markers. The raw data can show us that later. The last number represents the number of waves we have detected the object at the current location. As you can see, this object was moving along rather quickly and then stopped.”

“How is that possible?” someone in the crowd cried out.

Shaking her head,”I am not sure. People please realize that we need to build up a knowledge base of what is being recorded. I can not truthfully answer with any degree of certainty.”

“So it’s probably nothing right?” asked one of the reporters.

Shrugging her shoulders, she hit the mic button, “Doctor Garrett, any additional information?”

“The raw data suggests it has decreased its speed to 10% of light speed.”

Over the next hour it sat in the J position, while the gathered officials and engineers tried to guess what was going on. Calls out to observatories, to governments and SETI were made to try and see if anyone can zoom in on the area and find out additional information. No one responded that they could. Discussions over the data feeds intensified as many of the governments wanted to the data so they can do their own analysis against other forms of data they had.

After another three hours, the data feeds were being passed to many interested parties. Other tracks were checked to see if any other objects acted similarly. Four and a half hours later, the object started moving again.

The crowd had only lessened a little. Everyone was trying to determine the import of Object 1321. No one really wanted to leave what could be a historical moment in the history of humanity and Earth.

Over the next hour, Object 1321 moved off the display. Tanya had the display expand further out from 2 light years to 4 light years. The next control room shift came on but the retiring shift did not leave. An hour and a half later, the object was listed as “Detection Lost”.

Many started to leave, many questions remaining unanswered. Was it a craft, a natural object or just some wackiness in the system? Tanya and Jay left that day, excited about what that might mean. How their system found that and the idea they might see more like it.

The excitement continued into the night in their love making. In the early morning hours, a satisfied Tanya, listening to Jay’s breathing, took in the view of the stars through the window. Her last thoughts before sleep took her were, I wonder why it stopped?

Around 5am that morning, a new object appeared near where Object 1321 held it’s position. This object was labeled Object 2912. It moved slightly over the next few hours but in the excitement of Object 1321, no one really noticed that Object 2912 came in to the solar system from a start point near one light year to near the orbit of Pluto. And there it sat.

Maybe the beginning of a new story?

 

 

 

Short Story: Time to Come Home.

“Mr. President, we have General Finder on the line.”

“Thank you Colonel. General Finder, it is time, we are going to Defcon 1. We need to launch immediately.” Said President Crue.

Gasps around the command center, as most of the operators stopped talking.

Colonel Mendez was ashen white. “Mr. President, what are you doing? There is no immenient threat.”

“Colonel are you contradicting me?” President Crue said.

Swallowing hard, “Mr. President, I believe this is an illegal order.”

General Finder was switched over to the speakerphone. “Mr. President, what is going on, why would we launch?”

“Does anyone else wish to disobey my orders?” An agitated president said. Pointing at his secret service agents, “Remove the colonel. General do I need someone to replace you too?”

The agents looked at each other and then moved to apprehend the colonel. One of the Marine guards raised his weapon at the Secret Service agents and ordered “Halt, stand down, sirs.”

 The other Marines looked unsure for a second but then followed the other Marine. The agents were outnumbered three to one.

President Crue was looking extremely angry and stood up when General Finder spoke, “Everyone calm down. Mr. President what is the meaning of this?”

“Someone over there arrest and remove General Finder.  This is outrageous that my trusted officers would disobey the President of the United States in such a critical situation.”

Colonel Mendez slammed his hand on the table, “Sir, what critical situation? You are acting as a madman.”

 Everyone was looking at each other, no one moving. The president was fuming, the colonel was starring at the president. The Marines and agents were standing off and the other military operators were frozen at their terminals. No one was moving, then.

A glow surrounded one of the console operators and the operator, a female captain, stood up. “Ah young sir, I have found you. It is time to go home.”

President Crue looked at the operator in surprise, “Suhan, what are you doing here? I am in the middle of a situation. I will come home later.”

All the other people in the room starred between the young captain and the president. Lost looks and looks of incredulity were displayed on all those in the room. Even the Marines and the Secret Service agents were lowering their weapons and looking at this exchange.

“Young sir, your mother demands you come home immediately. The party will start soon.” said Suhan.

“I am not ready. I have a war to wage with these people.” pouted President Crue.

“Sir, these beings probably would not appreciate you destroying their race. Best you come home now.” Suhan started to turn.

“No, I am not coming.” President Crue whined, then defensively, “I will not destroy their race, many will survive. It will be interesting. You will see.”

 General Finder’s voice came across the speakerphone. “What in the hell is going on over there, somebody…”

Suhan waved a hand and the line went dead. “Really sir, I must insist you come now. These primitive beings can be here for you next time. Do not make me pull you.”

A worried look crossed President Crue’s face. “You wouldn’t dare. Mother will not allow you.”

“Actually your mother has authorized me to pull you if I need to.” Suhan rose a hand and a multi-colored ball appeared, pulsating different colors in different areas.

Colonel Mendez found his voice, “What or who are you?”

President Crue smiled an amused smile, “Surprise!”

 Suhan looked bored, “Young sir, it is time.”

Looking resigned, “Oh very well, if I must.” Then looking at the Colonel, “You can have your idiot back.”

Colonel Mendez said, “What have you done to President Crue?”

“Nothing, I just borrowed him. He really is a simpleton, never would have won the election himself, so I helped him.” Standing up. “Now I must go for now, but I will be back to continue our little war.”

Frightened but one of the Marines said, “You were going to kill us all?”

“No no no dear boy, not all of you. The missile exchange would have killed many of you but not all of you.  In a thousand years your descendants would know of this day as the day of the God’s Fire. Quite interesting how their story will develop.”

“Sir, that is enough. These primitives do not understand what you are saying.”

“Oh come now Suhan, they are actually quite smart for their age.”

Colonel Mendez said, “We don’t want you back. Never come back.”

Suhan looked at the Colonel, “What did you say?”

President Crue, “No!  No! Don’t say it.”

Colonel Mendez looked at Suhan, “What? Never come back?”

Suhan, “Yes, do you mean that?” Looking at the other people in the command center. “Do you all wish for him to not come back?”

President Crue was screaming, “No No No, do not say it. Please!”

A resounding chorus of “YES!” from all in the command center.

“No please, you are ruining my fun!”

Suhan looks at President Crue, “Young sir, you are now bound by the Writ of the Plea to no longer interfere with this race of beings.” A bright flash occurred and President Crue fell to the floor. No one moved.

Suhan looked at Colonel Mendez, “Do not worry human, he is gone and your human is back. He will not be allowed to interfere again. I am sorry that he had gotten this far.”

“He was going to kill us all.” Cried out one of the operators.

“Yes, well that did seem his intent. I do apologize. As you see, we stopped him before he could.”

“Who are you and what makes you think you can do this to us.” Colonel Mendez demanded.

“Who we are is not your concern. What makes us think we can do this to you? My dear sir, you are babes, with little understanding of the universe. I am but a servant and could destroy your world with a thought. As you do with your lower life forms on this world, we do with you. You were his entertainment.” Sitting back in her seat.

“I am really sorry that he almost destroyed you. I will advise his mother, the Empress, to bar all further interference with your species and region of space. To give you a chance to live free for awhile.”

The captain fainted and then a second later, looked around and freaked out. President Crue was moaning and trying to get up. Everyone else was still frozen in place trying to make sense of what just happened.

From the Web: Finding Aliens with Gravity Waves

Recently, there has been a lot of talk of being able to detect gravity waves. The dreamer in me definitely loves that idea. An article on Gizmodo by Jennifer Ouellette discusses that they think they can detect waves made by very large objects.

Assuming that they have figured out how to measure gravity waves, how can we use it? I think we have discovered our first long range detection system for alien craft. Similar to Radio Direction Finding techniques, we will have Gravity Direction Finding systems.

These systems will “listen” for the waves, in all directions. It should be linked to provide a direction finding solution on where the object that caused the wave is located. The detection system will need to be able to determine which part of the sensor first registered the wave. That site will then send their direction solution to a central system.  All sites in the cluster will report their solutions and the central system will calculate where the object is.

In time, we will be able to increase the sensitivity of the detection system. The more sensitive the system the better chance we can “listen” for transient gravity waves.  Most objects in space are fairly stationary, in a relative sense, to us. We can soon identify all the larger waves that will come from one particular direction (like distant stars or black holes).

A space craft, asteroid or comet would be moving across the spectrum. Also this is probably more than a single wave, so successive waves will hit different parts of the sensor over time. Most stars would probably hit the same sensor. A comet or asteroid would, over time transit across the sensor giving a track to follow.

Assuming that space craft would need to be at higher speeds than a comet or asteroid, to make space travel feasible, they would quickly pass along the sensor head. While we could not really catch them in real time, we could tell of their passage.

This system probably could not detect craft too far away from our system, due to background noise. If a craft passed half way through the Oort Cloud, it would take almost 140 days for the gravity wave to get near earth. Our Oort Cloud goes out 1-2 light years which might or might not be a navigation hazard for interstellar travel.

The good news is that we probably can track an object coming into our solar system. With gravity waves traveling at light speed and assuming a craft would have to slow down their approach into the solar system, we should get a “hit” on our Gravity Direction Finding system before they show up.

I guess the worse thing would be to see a lot of UFOs come into the Kuiper Belt, stop for a short time, then move on. Boy that would be a massive hit on our self-confidence. Aliens find us boring.

So while we wait to see if E.T. has an interstellar highway near us, we can always use this to track asteroids and comets. A noble cause and something near and dear to most of us.

Saviors: A new Sci-Fi Universe

I have started another universe based on an idea I have had about an alien race coming to Earth and “uplifting” us to a space faring race.  Some would say why would anyone ever do something like that.  Most people are not that kind. Ah, but what if its not really out of kindness but because they have a need?

This novel will start with the aliens telling us why they are giving us a hand up. Let me know what you think?

Saviors

They came as civilizers, they said. Ya, civilization always screws the natives. In this case, we, humanity, are the natives. The Valodars came 10 years ago to much fanfare. Acting all high and mighty, they first tried to change us by appealing to our nobler side. Well, we never really were good at listening. So they then forced our primitive cultures to stop warring and fall under a one world government.

That showed us their true nature. They can kick ass with the best of em. They did a good job of destroying most of our military forces in a quick and violent set of strikes. Before we even knew what hit us, we were trashed and at their mercy. They then brought down their armored troops and made us see the errors of our ways.

Ya, civilized. The more civilized one gets the more violent the destruction they reap.

But then the Valodars or squidlies as we started to call them, shocked the shit out of us. Once they forced us into a one world government of their choosing, they started to teach us their technology. In the 6 years since our “education” began, we have been given warp capabilities, alright they call it phased translocation. But it still seems like Star Trek.

They helped us build star ships that could move around the solar system in hours. They gave us powerful propulsion systems, artificial gravity, nano technology, many wonderful technologies. They showed us how we can control these systems with our minds.

We have sent explorer ships to the neighboring stars and have found planets that could support life. We were planning on colonies light years away. Building space stations and habitats on the other planets in our system, Sol.

These were heady times. Man had found a true friend that freed us from our terrestrial bonds.

Or so we thought.

Empire Earth: A New Universe to play with

Premise:  Earth unites around a one world government the hard way – war. In 2033, the earth is united under the banner of the Earth Federation. The earth becomes a Type 1 civilization that can harness their planet and can reach interplanetary space.

This now identifies the inhabitants of Sol’s 3rd planet to have breached the barrier to InterStellar relations. The protocol that the Zshu set up millions of years ago means that advanced civilizations can interact. In all the ways that that little word can mean. The Zshu, the ancient ones that ascended to another evolutionary level but impose their rule on this one, declared that there are certain levels of interaction that can occur between civilizations, at different stages of advancement.

The Mjor are an old race that preys on new Type 1 civilizations. There are many races in the Milky Way like the Mjor but they are one of the original bad guys. The Mjor have learned to prosper within the guidelines that the Zshu have set. One of the Zshu’s rules is that particular type civilizations can not destroy or control lower types. The Mjor can not destroy or conquer the human species because of it’s primitive state. The law does allow Humanity to seek protection by the Mjor and then the Mjor can do as they wish, as long as they do not destroy Humanity.

So with that premise, I have already started a timeline.  Not much yet and I have my When Atlantis Fell and Worm Hole Earth universes to work on as well.  I plan on doing a series on the Mjor-Humanity interactions but also many sub-plots or short stories.

With that, here is the beginning of the timeline:

Year Event
2015 Global war starts with NATO invading Russia over a flare up in Ukraine. Initially driving deep into Russia, the allies are beaten back by long supply lines and millions of chinese soldiers who join Russia. India also joins this alliance as NATO stirs up animosity with heavy handed miscues against India. A Chinese general helps the Eastern Alliance to stem the actions of NATO.
2016 The Eastern Alliance relies on large quantities of low tech systems to combat the NATO’s technological advantage. The Eastern Alliance invades and takes most of South East Asia and Australia. South Korea and Japan join the Eastern Alliance after US forces in those countries are eventually defeated and the US seems to go into a defensive mode in the Pacific.. In Europe, the Eastern Alliance moves the battle lines back towards the Russian border with overwhelming numbers.
2017 The Eastern Alliance and NATO open up fronts in Africa. While not completely safe, the Indian Ocean becomes an Eastern Alliance controlled ocean, facilitating the delivery of war supplies and troops to Africa while bringing back Africa’s resources to the industrial base of the Eastern Alliance. The NATO alliance also start to invade South American countries in a preventive measure. With most of their force fighting in Europe and Africa, the South American nations band together into the Federated States of America (FSA). The FSA is supported by the Eastern Alliance and the NATO Alliance is stopped at the Panama Canal with large guerilla forces operating throughout Central America.
2018 Eastern Alliance Generals Kurchatov and Li Shou prove unbeatable for the NATO Alliance. The problem is they can not be everywhere. Kurchatov defends the Russian front while Li Shou fights in southern Africa. NATO pushes into the Sinai with a combined invasion and strike along the Mediterranean coast. The US also breaks through the Panama Canal and enters Venezuela . On the Russian front, the NATO Alliance pushes back towards Volgograd in a move reminiscent of WWII. The massive forces push into the city of Volgograd to be met by stiff resistance in street fighting. After 2 month of beating back the Eastern Alliance forces to take the city, the ultimate trap is unleashed. The Eastern Alliance had planted massive bombs in the city and still have large quantities of artillery in range. In little over a week, massive missile and artillery barrages with the underground bombs destroy a large NATO force. At the same time a costly offensive is started all along the Russian front by the Eastern Alliance. Simliar offensives are started in South Africa and South America. At the end of the year the NATO Alliance is pushed back towards the borders they had at the beginning of the year.
2019 The Eastern Alliance learns to manipulate gravity into a shield. This technology projects a field of gravity so strong around a device that incoming missiles, shells and lasers are stopped before reaching the target. It literally crushes objects and bends laser light. The Eastern Alliance puts gravity projectors around the surviving cities and industrial bases. Due to the massive amounts of power required, This technology could not be used for military forces. NATO could not penetrate the shields. The Eastern Alliance starts to concentrate industrial might around cities that have these shields.
2020 NATO forces start deploying hand held rail gun technology that starts to cause problems for the Eastern Alliance and FSA. In a desperate attempt to counter this technology, the Eastern Alliance builds an orbital space ship. NATO tries to stop the launch of the ship with nuclear weapons but is thwarted by the gravity shields. Once the ship obtains orbit, it destroys all NATO satellite systems it finds with its rail guns. Using its gravity shield, the EAS Victory defeats the NATO Alliance’s space station, utterly destroying it. Utilizing kinetic rounds, the EAS Victory pounds capitals of many NATO member states. Peace is offered with heavy penalties to the NATO Alliance. NATO accepts.
2021 The Moscow Peace Treaty signed by all parties. NATO must leave Africa and return Central America to the FSA. They also had to give up much technology they developed. This total sell out was deemed better than destruction by kinetics.
2023 General Li Shou trades in his uniform and becomes the President of the Eastern Alliance. This becomes a federated state of all member states have limited powers. The FSA formerly joins the Eastern Alliance which is renamed the Earth Federation. The Earth Federation embarks on a massive program to build cities underground, build a larger space presence and re arm their military with laser and rail gun technology. Li Shou pushes for a new language to developed based on English so all members of the Earth Federation can talk to each other. The one common language for most of the Federation is English. The NATO alliance is limited in their improvements due to the constraints put on them by the peace treaty.
2029 The Earth Federation establishes two space stations in high earth orbit. Using their gravity based technology, they not only build shields but also provide their stations and ships with artificial gravity. There are 10 war ships and the new mining ships that search the asteroid belt for valuable objects.
2032 War erupts between the US and Europe. The NATO alliance is broken. The war starts over the Earth Federations offer to invite NATO to be part of the Federation. The US refuses the offer but many European nations want to join the Federation. In the years since WWW3, the NATO alliance has steady diminished cut off from the rest of the worlds resources and not allowed to leave the planet. The stronger nations used the weaker ones for their raw resources. Many nations of central and southern Europe did not like the situation and jumped at the chance of joining the Federation which has improved the living standards of many. President Li Shou had proven a leader of great vision. Bettering his people, making them learn the new Common tongue but allowing them to keep their mother tongues and rebuilding a professional military.
2033 The Earth Federation joins the war against the US, France, Germany, UK and Poland alliance. Before major Earth Federation ground forces engage the enemy, the Federation Fleet uses kinetics to destroy most of the war and industrial capacity of the Alliance. The war ends with the entire world part of the Earth Federation.
2034 The Federation’s Tranquility Moon Base becomes operational.
2035 A UFO enters the Sol system and stops around Jupiter. The Federation Navy tracks the device and sees that it is a ship of some sort. The Federation commissions another 10 ships and arms the stations. A crash project is made to get the former NATO Alliance populations in underground cities along with all those that had yet to be relocated.
2036 A probe is set towards the space ship is destroyed as it gets within 1 million kms of the ship. Later in the year 10 more ships come in the the system and meet up with the original.

An article by Caroline Reid on IFLScience about a powerful laser producing anti-matter sounds interesting. Yes, there are ways to produce now. Can this produce more? Will we be able to produce enough to use for engines?

Worm Hole Earth: Background – Military History Part 2

A continuation of the military history of the Republic of Man, then the Solarian Empire.

In the 2240s, the Republic started to experiment with remote controlled ships. Controlled via the rings, so the idea of living quarters was no longer a consideration. The military also grasped this idea with a passion. The idea was to build massively dense ships that consisted mostly of an engine, sensors and weapons systems surrounded by a solid metal shell. No crew quarters and only a Ring room (normally in engineering with Jrings for artificial gravity) with passageways to the weapons and sensor locations. These passageways were deep within the armor of the craft, with only their weapons ports showing. While the sensors were near the surface of the craft, the weapons systems were deep in the shell, with massive turret type armor systems around them. This would slow the slewing of the weapon but would provide a massively protected weapon platform.

When the military started putting more ring weapons on these vessels, they built passageways out to the skin of the ship for maintenance of the rings. Then, someone came up with the idea of putting the rings in the turrets. A mechanism was built that would house many rings, that hosted different weapon systems. When a weapon was called for, the device would turn the correct ring towards the firing port. This meant the system could keep up a massive amount of firepower, over a long time. Since surface weapon rings were vulnerable to damage, it was decided to build many turrets, massive and smaller ones all over the ship.

For the larger battleships, 8 massive turrets were built and 16 smaller ones. The massive turrets had the weapons carousel, while the smaller ones would have just a single ring. Most of these smaller turrets would in the time of the Empire, connect to stations that would be able to connect many different types of weapons to the ring but would take more time in doing so. The massive turrets had rings that could be served by many different locations.

In the 25th Century, the ships would have hangar bays for remote controlled fighters and bombers. These systems would also have rings in them. Their weapons ports were ring weapons and their control was ring based. Due to their size, the rings were smaller and could not use the same ring weapons that the larger ships used. These fighters were extremely powerful since they could still pump out gigawatts of laser power or fire an almost unlimited number of missiles or projectiles. They were basically a large engine with enough fuel storage capacity to keep the engine running. The rest of the fuel was provided via ring fuel systems.

In the battleship’s hangar bays, there were a few ring ports and Jring gravity systems. When flight ops was called for, a flight crew was sent forth to care for any damaged fighters or to move them into position. While this could have been handled by robots or a complex mechanical system, it was thought that EMP would probably disable the system or the robots were not monitored enough. Man was still worried about AI taking over. Damaged craft that could not be fixed on the hangar deck were pushed through one of the Rings to a fighter depot back in Imperial space. When fighters were destroyed, new ones could be sent through to the hangar bay.

Since there was still the problem of passing rings through rings, additional rings were stored, in the hangar bays, in EMP-protected store rooms. The human crew was only present when flight ops were initiated. These were normally done well before ship to ship combat was initiated. The fighters would be sent out first to either attack before the ships or to try and flank the enemy. Some would be kept back, to help with the area defense, but most were released to attack.

Worm Hole Earth: Military Part 1

Here is a piece of the Military history that I having been working on.

In the late 22nd century, the Republic of Man had built their first space fleet. These consisted of large tubular vessels that used the Jrings to provide artificial gravity and shields. They used fusion reactors to move around and could not venture beyond mars without resupply. Quarters were fairly cramped and the lifestyle was not so jokingly compared to the days of wooden ships and iron men, during the 17-18th centuries.

Armed with rail guns and missiles, these early ships were designed to combat the last remaining holdout nations who were putting space stations into orbit with primitive shuttles that were armed with missiles. Of the most advance, the Republic of Texas and Florida and the Nordic Federation, they had built larger vessels that could make it out to the asteroid belt and set up a few mining colonies. These last holdouts traded and feared the Republic but could not do anything to counter their more advanced systems.

In the last days of the Republic of Texas and Florida, Prime Minister Tolbon of the Republic of Man offered the Republic of Texas and Florida a chance to surrender. A major engagment in the Gulf of Mexico had destroyed most of the small republics military forces on Earth. The small republic had armed up a few of their freighters and frigates and sent them out to raid the Republic of Man’s space stations. The Republic’s 1st and 2nd squadrons (5 ships each) went after these privateers while the 3rd squadron destroyed all space borne assets of the small republic.

The Battle of Vesta was the first space fleet engagement in human history with the Republic of Man’s 3rd squadron taking on the remnants of the privateers that the Republic of Texas and Florida had created. The battle took place two weeks after the surrender of the Republic on Earth because the space rebels would not surrender. With all of their bases destroyed by the Republic of Man’s 1st and 2nd squadrons and those two squadrons closing in on the 12 remaining vessels of the privateer force, the 3rd squadron surprised the enemy at Vesta.

The RMS Moscow, one of the newest of the fleet’s vessels, was armed with an experimental ring fed rail gun. The rail gun sat on Earth and was capable of firing 6 rounds a minute vice the current ship board system that could only fire 2 rounds a minute. The Republic’s plan was to let the RMS Moscow fire on the enemy from a greater distance than normal and see what happens. The other major point of the ring weapon is that it did not run out of ammo like a shipboard system would.

As the opposing forces closed the RMS Moscow started firing in a random fashion at the enemy just filling the space between them with kinetic rounds. After a short time, the rest of the 3rd squadron started to fire to add their rounds to the storm bearing down on the enemy. The privateer force tried to move out of the way of the incoming rounds but the rounds would not stop and kept tracking the enemy force. Eventually the privateers were getting hit or crashed into each other and then were hit. The entire privateer force was destroyed without getting a chance to return fire as they were out of alignment with the Republic’s force for their rail guns and missiles.

The first space based battle was also the first battle in which ring weapons were used. They immediately showed their value and thus began humanities use of its most important capability. Over the next 100 years would see the continued concentration of power into fighting vessels and the emergence of bigger and more powerful ring weapons.
